I like to stagger the deadlines over 2 or 3 days. So depending on your time zone (Unfortunately, the site currently only displays in Eastern time so keep that in mind when inviting people and setting deadlines) you could do something like:
3 days with first deadline before the tourney:
Deadline #1: Wednesday, April 6 at 5pm EST
Deadline #2: Thursday, April 7 at 5pm EST
Deadline #3: Friday, April 8 at 5pm EST
A bit tighter over 2 days with a later deadline to join:
Deadline #1: Thursday at 10am EST
Deadline #2: Thursday at 5pm EST
Deadline #3: Friday at 3pm EST
3 days; Later with first deadline well into the first round:
Deadline #1: Thursday at 1pm EST
Deadline #2: Friday at 1pm EST
Deadline #3: Saturday at 1pm EST
You can do most anything. Staggered deadlines keeps players engaged and lets them adjust picks as the players perform from round to round. They tee off at 9am EST. So, you may want to have one deadline before this and the others after it. We find that if you make your deadline to join the pool after tee off, you can always grab the procrastinators.
There's also a setting to reveal/hide picks after each deadline. If you set Reveal Picks, players will have a tendency to try and pick something different than the others for their 2nd and 3rd picks.
To make the game more fun, use the Talk Back feature to get people engaged and talk about it along the way. Start it off with a bit of smack talk.
