About the 2018 NIT Tournament, Teams, Games and Brackets
The 2018 Basketball Tournament, also known as the National Invitational Tournament features 32, Division 1 men's basketball teams that didn't get selected for the main March Madness tournament of 64 teams. The tournament begins on Tuesday March 13 with the first 3 rounds played at various universities. The Semi-finals will be played on Tuesday March 27, 2018 and the Championship Game will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Thursday March 29, 2018. The games will be broadcast via ESPN, as well as Westwood One, ESPNU, ESPN2 and ESPN3.
The 32 men's basketball teams will be selected by committee on March 11, 2018. Teams not selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament but had won their conference will automatically qualify for the NIT. The remaining teams will be selected and slotted into brackets based on records and performance. There will be four tournament brackets of eight teams each.
This year, the NIT will experiment with new rules:
- The 3-point line will 20 inches further back
- The free throw area will be widened by 4 feet, from 12 to 16.
- Games will be played in 4, ten-minute quarters rather than two, 20-minute halves.
- There will be a 20 second shot clock after offensive rebounds instead of thirty seconds.
